I received these terry oven mitts as a gift for Christmas and had a hard time starting to use them.
For years I was using flame retardant mitts that worked wonders. Eventually they became very dirty and as you can't wash them because of the retardant treatment, I had to use another pair.
I had stored the terry oven mitts away, but decided to give it a try and place them in service. Not only they performed in a very similar fashion to my beloved flame retardant, but they are actually softer. Also the cream color will probably allow for a longer life as spills might not be as visible as on a black fabric.
The mitts are fairly long and cover most of my forearm, so I am not concerned getting burned while removing hot dishes from the oven. As with most mitts, you should mostly use them to squeeze the dish between both hands and not necessarily grabbing like you would with a glove. However, it is very convenient to have a separate thumb, which allows for some occasional grip.
I do not know if these can hold as much temperature as my flame retardant mitts, but so far I never felt the heat.

These are great, they cover the entire forearm so you'll never burn yourself getting food out of a hot oven. I use them on a daily basis.

My 11 year old kids use them without trouble. It is flexible enough for them. I felt no heat through them. Although I can't deduct a star for it, it has really long cuffs. Imagine the cuff length twice what is shown in the photo. One of my kids, though, find that more protective. It is minor annoyance for me.

The large mitts are difficult to bent and hold items out of the oven. Very clumsy. Good at retaining your hand from heat though.
